San Diego Root Canals and Endodontic Specialists
Endodontists are board-certified dentists that specialize in therapies like root canals. At Crown Dental Group, we have Endodontists as part of our staff, so there’s no need to be referred somewhere else for your care.
Is a Root Canal Necessary?
Why do some people need root canals? The answer is very simple. When the nerve inside of a tooth becomes damaged, it harms the tooth from the inside out. A root canal removes the damaged nerve tissue and seals the chamber off, to prevent reinfection.
Conditions that indicate the need for endodontic therapy often include:
- Abscessed teeth
- Fractured roots
- Broken, chipped teeth
- Decay that has extended into the nerve chamber
- Traumatized teeth that are showing signs of discoloration
- Severe sensitivity
What to Expect
Root canal appointments can take slightly longer than a filling or a crown. To keep you comfortable, the entire area around the tooth is numbed. Some of our patients also request sedation to help them relax. After all of the damaged tissue has been removed, the chamber will be medicated and sealed off.
Once a tooth has had a root canal, it will also need to have a crown placed over it. Crowns protect the brittle, non-vital enamel from wearing away.
